Legend tells of the daughter of King Carius and the beloved of Dionysus, whom he transformed into a walnut tree after her death. Artemis brought the news to her father and commanded him to build a temple in her honor. The columns were made of wood in the shape of a young woman and were named caryatids – nymphs of the walnut tree.
The walnut is a "sacred" tree among Bulgarians, which plants itself. Walnuts are revered not only for their centuries-old existence but also as a valuable food and medicine. The tree provides shelter, shade in the summer heat, and protection from lightning and heavy rain – it was called Gromolomnik (Thunder-breaker).
